Overcoming "Storage Room Gluttony"

As one year ends and another begins, resolutions are made to start fresh by cleaning out and reorganizing spaces.  Many times this is by creating storage spaces that make optimal use of the space and thus, bringing with it the benefits of saving time, energy and money.

The goal of a storage room is to temporarily place something out of sight where one is able to identify and retrieve it easily when needed. What's the use of keeping it for later use, if you are unable to locate it?   Often church storage rooms are full.  Rarely is there enough storage space but there are steps that can be taken to organize and free up space.  An article by Jim Rodgers, posted December 17, 2009 on BuildingForMinistry.com details the steps to overcome "storage room gluttony".

Three step process to free up space:  1. Reclaim; 2. Relocate; 3. Renovate.

1.  Reclaim current/former storage space.  Develop a plan for organizing before beginning.

     a.  Archive items of church historical value.

     b.  Distribute items of perceived value.

     c.  Put Christian materials to work.

     d.  Throw away with stewardship in mind.

2.  Relocate items among the body.

3.  Renovate the facility.  Evaluate storage needs when embarking on a building renovation or addition, but only after the first two steps have been completed.

To avoid future storage dilemmas, put the process into practice.  Evaluate the item considered for storage. Is it worth keeping? Will it be used again and how soon?  Label, document and store items with care and in the least amount of space for future use.

Let's start the new year by trimming away the "gluttony" with the detailed suggestions found in "How to Find More Storage Space".
